Edd

Edd Caine - piano/leader

Edward Caine (MA) was brought up in Scotland and lives in York, where he is now studying for a PhD in Composition at the University of York under Prof. Roger Marsh. In addition to being a composer Edd works as Projects Manager for Late Music (www.latemusic.org), Assistant for publisher UYMP (www.uymp.co.uk) Welfare Tutor and Music Tutor for Vanbrugh College, University of York, a freelance Jazz pianist and Piano Teacher and a Web designer/programmer.

Edd’s work focusses on sonority, the mechanisms of performance post-serialistic pitch structures and found material. Amongst his influences are György Ligeti, Salvatore Sciarrino, Georges Aperghis and Helmut Lachenmann.

Edd has worked with a number of ensembles and soloists including Black Hair Ensemble, Alison Wells, Gemini Ensemble, Chimera, YoMAMA choir, Veriditas Opera, Fitzwilliam String Quartet, Ossian Ensemble, Nora Ryan, Ian Pace, TOEAC Accordion Duo, Rika Zayasu, Nieuw Ensemble, Trio Atem, Charlotte Bishop, Damien and Maria Harron, Ensemble Bright Cecilia, Vanbrugh Voices, Vanbrugh Ensemble, Kreutzer Quartet, Brake Drum Percussion. He has had his work performed and workshopped in Durham University,Fortrose Academy - Scotland, Spring Festival of New Music, York 2002, 2003 + 2010, Late Music Festival 2005, 2008, Late Music Concert Series 2009-10, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2010, York “Spoken Word” Open Mic Night, University of York Concert Series, “Sconfini” Arts Festival, Modena and Chelthenham Festival.

Enrico

Enrico Bertelli - percussion

Deeply interested in Contemporary Music, with a special emphasis on the Percussion music repertory. A rich background mixes the theoretical preparation achieved through university, with the instrumental skills gained through intense studies at the Conservatoire and at the various master classes.

Since moving to the UK, worked closely with composers, investigating the possibilities of percussion instruments and trying to push the conventional boundaries.

Firmly convinced of the importance of an informed performance, constantly approaches every piece both as a performer and as a musicologist. This duality helps achieve a better understanding of the music and enables communicating with the audience with sounds and words.

The current PhD in Contemporary Performance - Percussion at York University, follows an MA in Performance Studies at Cardiff University (Distinction), BA in TARS - Tecniche Artistiche e dello Spettacolo at Ca'Foscari University - Venice and Diploma in Strumenti a Percussione at the Conservatorio di Verona both with top marks.

The research topic aims to create, by all possible means, a portable percussion concert. Deeply investigating the object-trouvés, performance-applied electronics and non-conventional instruments.

Recent teachers: Rainer Roemer (Ensemble Moderne), Ruud Wiener (vibraphone), Igor Lesnik (multi-percussion), Jasmin Kolberg (marimba), Matteo di Francesco (marching band) at the Giornate della Percussione at the Conservatorio `G.B. Current Teachers: Chris Brannick (multi-percussion and Ghanaian music), Michael Skinner (Basle drumming and orchestral techniques) at GSMD (London).

Many other concerts in Contemporary Music Festivals in Italy where held with Brake Drum Percussion, De Mallet Duo, Ensemble l'Arsenale, Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto. Before entering the profession, he worked with Cardiff University Chamber, Contemporary and New Music ensembles and won the Second Prize at the Concorso del Teatro Filarmonico di Verona. Principal percussionist in the Youth Orchestras Ecce Gratum, La Réjouissance and Banda F. Visentin with solo playing and tv broadcastings.

As a composer, Enrico is interested in improvisation for percussion and electronics. M@elodie was the first composition premiered at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds (UK) together with the choreography of Elodie Frati.

Enrico writes regularly for Finnegans - Quarterly Contemporary Art Review and the Cultural Association Impero Bizantino.

As a concert manager, Enrico has been working towards the performances of the Brake Drum Percussion, Hesse Student at the Aldeburgh Art and Music Festival, and takes care of logistics and management of the music festivals in Italy Concerti di Primavera (Paese - TV), Contemporaneità Sonore (Roncade - TV), Finestre sul 900 (Treviso).


Chris

Christopher Leedham - clarinets

Christopher Leedham (b. 1981) is currently studying for a PhD in Composition at the University of York under the supervision of Roger Marsh. Before York he studied at Oxford University, taking composition lessons with Robert Saxton and Guy Newbury, and at the London College of Music, where he gained an MMus with distinction. Prizes include the Lyons Celebration Award, LCM Postgraduate Composition Prize and finalist in the BBC Young Composer of the Year Competition. His works have been performed across the UK and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and BBC Two by members of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, The 24 and The Vertigo Project, and he has taken part in workshops with the Allegri Quartet and Kreutzer Quartet.
